Why?
We have a huge issue in this country: Fatphobia.
I can’t tell you how many people I know who don’t participate fully in their lives because of fatphobia.
I want to help you be in your life: I want you to go the party, be in the picture, eat the treat, apply for the job you really want, go to the audition, date, dance, wear the clothes you want, move your body, swim, go for your dreams and PARTICIPATE IN YOUR OWN PRECIOUS LIFE. I want to help you do all of this and more.
Very few people are addressing (or are even acknowledging) fatphobia. Most people choose to run from it or worse, are so entrenched in it, they can’t even recognize it. No other issue has had more power or control over my life than the shame, hatred and discomfort of my own body. I started hating my body when I was 8 years old. I developed an eating disorder a few years later. I lost a dear friend to anorexia a few years after that. My relationship to my body is something I’ve struggled with my entire life. Unfortunately, I do not carry a unique story. Hating our bodies is not only culturally accepted, it is encouraged. We hate our bodies because of the rampant and systemic fatphobia we have had engrained in us our entire lives.
Fatphobia is prevalent and deeply imbedded in our culture. Diet Culture is a $72 billion dollar industry that thrives on you hating yourself and spending your hard-earned money on changing and “improving” yourself. We don’t have a sustainable or ethical method of weight loss available to us. Diets (aka Programs or “Lifestyle Changes”) don’t work. 95% of people who diet to lose weight will gain back all the weight they lose within 1 to 5 years. 67% of those people gain back more than they lost. Let me say that again for the people in the back: NINETY-FIVE PERCENT OF DIETS FAIL long-term. Would you say yes to riding a rollercoaster where the seatbelt fails 95% of the time?!
Yet this $72 billion-dollar industry continues to thrive because it’s not the diet’s fault if you gain back the weight – it’s YOURS. You lack willpower. You weren’t strong enough or dedicated enough. You were too lazy and weak. And sadly, many people who sell these programs have been duped themselves. They have been taught (and now believe) that the diet only fails because those participating are morally inferior to them.
Ultimately, diet culture depends on you failing and blaming yourself. It’s deeply invested in ensuring the cycle of weight-cycling and yo-yo dieting continues so that they have a built-in revenue stream of you returning again and again to do it “right” this time. Diets are designed to FAIL.
95% of people who diet gain back all the weight they lose within 1 to 5 years of finishing the diet. 67% of those people gain back more than they lost.
Now is the time to stop this cycle of shame and be the change we wish to see for ourselves and future generations.
